Finding Flights

Best tools:

• Google Flights Explorer — Best for cash bookings. Flexible date views, price alerts, and an "Explore" map showing cheapest destinations. The date grid instantly shows if flying ±2 days saves money.
• Points Yeah Explorer — Best for mileage/points redemptions. Free account shows award availability across airline programs so you can find the best use of your miles.

Booking Rules

Always book direct with the airline:

• Book through the airline's own website or app, not third parties (Expedia, credit card portals, OTAs). Direct bookings give full flexibility to change, cancel, or rebook without going through an intermediary.
• Credit card portals don't help with award flights — Chase/Amex/Citi travel portals book revenue tickets, not mileage redemptions. They can't match the value of booking award seats directly through airline programs, especially on partner airlines ("someone else's metal") where you lose elite benefits, upgrade eligibility, and mileage earning.
• When portals ARE okay: Simple point-to-point economy cash tickets you're unlikely to change. The portal cashback can be worth it if the ticket is cheap and inflexible anyway.

Strategy: Search Google Flights → Check Points Yeah for award value → Book direct with airline → Set a price alert in case fares drop.

Flexible Date Pricing (This Trip)

Use these links to compare prices across a date range:

Flights already booked — but useful if plans change. Business class prices can swing significantly across a few days.

Maximise Rewards on Hotels & Activities

Before booking anything (hotels, attraction tickets, tours), check cashback portals — they earn 3-15% back. On bonus days, rates are significantly higher.

Best portals (check all — rates vary by day):

• Rakuten — Often the highest rates, especially on bonus/double cashback days. Viator, Hotels.com, Booking.com all available.
• Capital One Shopping — Excellent rewards on certain days. Auto-activates via browser extension.
• Credit card portals (Chase, Amex, Citi) — Good baseline (3-5x points), but usually lower than Rakuten on bonus days.

Find the best rate right now:

• CashBackMonitor.com — Compares rates across ALL portals for any store. Search "Viator" or "Hotels.com" to see who pays most today.

Portal-eligible platforms for this trip:

• Viator — Attraction tickets, skip-the-line passes, tours
• TripAdvisor — Attraction tickets and experiences
• Booking.com / Hotels.com — Hotel bookings (check both)
• Renfe — Not typically in portals (book direct)

⚠️ Always click through the portal FIRST, then search and book. If you go to the site directly and then activate the portal, it may not track. Portals are for hotels and activities only — NOT flights (see above).

Rail Pass vs Individual Tickets

Recommendation: Book individual advance tickets.

The Renfe Spain Pass offers 4/6/8 journeys at a fixed price (~€290 for 4 in Comfort class). For 8 journeys = ~€940–1,160 for two.

Individual advance tickets (booked 60 days ahead) in Preferente class: approximately €400–600 total for two — significantly cheaper.

Why individual wins:

• Fixed dates = no need for pass flexibility
• Advance prices are dramatically cheaper on AVE routes
• Short Toledo/Segovia trains are only €12–13pp regardless
• Pass doesn't guarantee seats — still need reservations

Action: Set a calendar reminder for mid-August 2026 (60 days before Oct 13) to book all trains on renfe.com. Select "Preferente" class.

Alternative: Eurail Spain Pass (from €328 for 4 days) — only if you want last-minute flexibility.
