💡 Booking & Travel Tips

Tools, portals, and strategies for booking smart

✈️ Flight Planning

Finding Flights

Best tools:

Booking Rules

Always book direct with the airline:

Strategy: Search Google Flights → Check Points Yeah for award value → Book direct with airline → Set a price alert in case fares drop.

Flexible Date Pricing (This Trip)

Use these links to compare prices across a date range:

Flights already booked — but useful if plans change. Business class prices can swing significantly across a few days.

💳 Points & Cashback

Maximise Rewards on Hotels & Activities

Before booking anything (hotels, attraction tickets, tours), check cashback portals — they earn 3-15% back. On bonus days, rates are significantly higher.

Best portals (check all — rates vary by day):

Portal-eligible platforms for this trip:

⚠️ Always click through the portal FIRST, then search and book. If you go to the site directly and then activate the portal, it may not track. Portals are for hotels and activities only — NOT flights (see above).

🚄 Train Travel

Rail Pass vs Individual Tickets

Recommendation: Book individual advance tickets.

The Renfe Spain Pass offers 4/6/8 journeys at a fixed price (~€290 for 4 in Comfort class). For 8 journeys = ~€940–1,160 for two.

Individual advance tickets (booked 60 days ahead) in Preferente class: approximately €400–600 total for two — significantly cheaper.

Why individual wins:

Action: Set a calendar reminder for mid-August 2026 (60 days before Oct 13) to book all trains on renfe.com. Select "Preferente" class.

Alternative: Eurail Spain Pass (from €328 for 4 days) — only if you want last-minute flexibility.

📱 Trip Management

TripIt — Keep Bookings Organised & Power the Plan

TripIt (free) turns booking confirmations into a single, organised itinerary. Alerts you to flight conflicts, gate changes, delays, and schedule overlaps.

How to use:

What it catches: Flight time changes, layover conflicts, hotel check-in/check-out mismatches, schedule gaps. Stores confirmation numbers, addresses, terminal info.

Free version does everything you need. TripIt Pro (paid) adds real-time flight alerts — nice but not essential.

💡 Keeps this trip plan up to date too. Once TripIt has your bookings, Kiro can read them directly and overlay your actual confirmed hotels, trains, and activities onto this website — replacing suggestions with real times, booking indicators, and seat numbers. Forward your confirmations as you book, then ask Kiro to "update the plan with my actual bookings" at any point.

📝 Adding Your Own Recommendations

How It Works

This site supports personal recommendations via a Google Sheet or JSON file. Entries appear with a yellow background on the relevant city page.

Option A: Google Sheet (recommended) — Add rows to a spreadsheet, changes appear on the live site within 1 hour (or instantly with ?refresh on any URL).

Option B: JSON file — Edit my-recommendations.json directly and re-upload to Netlify.

Column headers: page, area, type, name, description, cost, distance, link, booking_link, notes

Only page, area, type, and name are required — leave other cells blank if unknown.

Valid values:

  • page: overview, malaga, seville, valencia, barcelona, madrid
  • area: Overview (top), Attractions, Hotels, Restaurants, Opera & Events, Wine & Cocktail Bars, Small Shops & Museums, Running Routes, Extras, Further Reading, Transport, End (bottom)
  • type: attraction, restaurant, bar, hotel, shop, note

To force refresh: Add ?refresh to any page URL after editing the Sheet.
